Detroit – — Google said Tuesday it would donate more than $230,000 to meet classroom supply requests that 261 Detroit area teachers posted on a crowdfunding website.
The teachers, who educate 32,466 students at 179 schools, will receive materials ranging from paper, pencils and books to laptops, musical instruments and microscopes.
Other projects funded include portable basketball hoops and basketballs at A.L. Holmes Elementary-Middle School in Detroit.
During an event at Michigan Technical Academy in Detroit, former Pistons player Earl Cureton, a Detroit native, joined Google officials in announcing the surprise donation, totaling $231,992.10, for supply requests posted on DonorsChoose.org.
"We are thrilled to partner with DonorsChoose.org to support all of the classroom projects of teachers here in the Detroit area. We owe a lot to our teachers and want to thank them for being a constant source of inspiration," said John Burchett, Google's director of public policy for the U.S., Latin America and Canada.
