Community College News

Five Michigan community colleges are partnering on a pilot program to let students in automotive technology programs transfer among the schools without losing credits or having to repeat course work.
Delta College, Grand Rapids Community College, Lansing Community College, Montcalm Community and Mott Community Colleges have signed the agreement. It was announced Friday by Nigel Francis, the state’s senior automotive adviser.
He says the deal is a “stellar example” of collaborations needed to ensure Michigan has a talented and well-trained auto industry workforce.
State officials say their goal is for the program to be a model for other fields of study. They say community college students face barriers to finishing their education due to employment and life changes forcing them to move to other parts of Michigan.

Detroit Pistons Palace Foundation Dream Big Competition

Bulldog Nation would like to congratulate one of our outstanding seniors.  Ms. Alexus Hatcher competed in the Annual Pistons Palace Foundation Dream Big Competition on Thursday, February 20, 2014.  Alexus did an expressive dance performance before a group of supportive fellow Bulldogs.  Alexus won valuable scholarship money towards her college degree.

Students presented songs, dances, essays and more at the Palace as part of the Detroit Piston's Dream Big event. The performances had the theme “How the big dreams of those who influenced African-American history will help both Detroit as a community and you — as a conduit — dream big for the future, and what do those dreams look like?”

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan hired a new human resources director and said let's get moving. They will get moving at month's end. A city job fair will be held Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Cobo Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Here is the breakdown of the 350 open positions:
-- 150 police officers are needed
-- 70 EMTs
-- 40 bus drivers
-- 40 licensed general auto mechanics
Those jobs cover most of the open positions. There are other big job openings such as a public works general manager, senior and principal accountants and even a tree artisan. Duggan said the pay and health care benefits are known. However, because of the city's bankruptcy, the pension benefits are not known just yet. "If you're the kind of person that there's something in your heart that you want to help people, public service, I believe, is a good career," he said.
