College Price hikes are modest

The sticker price of in-state tuition at four-year public universities climbed about $400 this fall, an increase of nearly 5 percent that brought the average to $8,655. That's a modest increase compared to recent years but still painful for families with stagnant incomes after a prolonged economic slump.

Nailing the College Admission Essay

Planning ahead is one of the most important elements in writing a good college admission essay.  If you allow yourself accurate time for numerous drafts and proofreading, it will allow you to create a unique and expressive introduction letter about you to the admission advisors.
9 Areas to Consider When Writing an Essay.
*      Do Some Soul Searching - What makes you unique? What can you tell the school they   won’t learn from your application? Consider your strengths and weaknesses.  You essay should enhance your overall application and help you stand out as an individual.
*      Don’t Get Stumped – If you feel blocked, asked yourself how you might answer the essay question if you were talking to a close friend. Brainstorm you life experiences and build from there.
*      Show Them You Are Interested – Show the school you have researched them and visit the school and their website.  Schools are more likely to admit a student who has made an effort to learn more about them.
*      Read Through And Analyze – Does your essay make sense.  Make sure it answers the question or topic presented.  The essay should be state the main topic in a concise and effective manner.
*      It’ All About You – If you are asked to write about a role model or event, don’t forget to focus the essay on yourself.  How were you changed? How did the person or event influence you? What did you learn from this journey?
*      Be a  Person Not a List – Do not just list a bunch or awards or activities.  Consider highlighting one or two items and explain how they help shape the person you are today.  Describe the cause and effect and steps you took to accomplish your goals.
*      Recycle – If you can use portions of one essay for another college application, then do so.  It will allow time management and allow you to focus on other things.  Please make sure the topic is relevant to the other school’s essay question.
*      Proof Read Again And Again – Grammatical errors conveys a lazy person who is not detail oriented.  Presentation counts and you want to be sure you make the right impression.
!!!!!!Get a Second Opinion – Have your teacher or counselor read your essay.  They can assist you with proofreading and often they know type of essay has been successful in the past.  Do not plagiarize someone else’s admission essay.  !!!!!

East English Village reaches PSL final

East English (7-1) advances to next week's championship game against Detroit King at Ford Field. Running back Desmond King led the East English with 23 carries for 167 yards and three scores.
"It was a good running game," said King. "We had to bounce everything to the outside because they were crashing down in the middle. It was amazing. Twenty-four power was working all night."
Cody scored on its first possession with DeMarco Gulley hitting Jamel Amerson for a 15-yard score with 6:38 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Gulley finished with 137 yards rushing, 187 passing and accounted for five TDs.
The Bulldogs responded with a time-consuming 66-yard drive with Anton Curtis hitting Khalid Hill for an 8-yard score with 11:55 left in the half to make it 7 all.
East English Village came up with an interception from Matthew Simpson and the offense turned the miscue into a 1-yard TD run from King to give the Bulldogs a 13-7 lead.
Cody tied the score at 13 with a 6-yard TD pass from Gulley to wide receiver Eddie Fluker.
However, Gulley was intercepted by sophomore Leon Timmons with less than 50 seconds to play in the half. Curtis hit Rico Lewis with an 11-yard slant pass for a score with 12 seconds left to give East English a 19-13 halftime lead and effectively turned the game in the Bulldogs' favor.
The Bulldogs opened the third with a 6-yard scoring pass from Curtis to King for a 25-13 lead. King then blew the game open with a 35-yard TD run to give East English a 31-13 lead with 32.1 seconds left in the third. Gulley scored on runs of 42, 6 and 5 yards to close the gap to 37-32.

Youth Who Do The Right Thing Competition

Special Announcement

The Urban League of Detroit & Southeastern Michigan (ULDSEM) is pleased to extend an opportunity for your school/church/community based organization to participate and share with youths & families involved in your programs and activities information regarding our annual “Youth Who Do the Right Thing” competition and celebration.

Each year the ULDSEM recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of youth in our community who “Do the Right Thing.” In 1996, the National Urban League launched a nation-wide initiative to celebrate young people who are achieving in school, church and their communities. Everyday, millions of youth are striving to “do the right thing”, yet their stories are seldom told. The competition and recognition is open to youth in grades 5-12 (ages 10-18 years) residing in Southeastern Michigan. We are looking for those special youths, regardless of race, social and economic background, who are making genuine contributions, excelling in school, serving their community and/or engaged in constructive activities.

We request your support and assistance with identifying youths in your school, community and/or church who have demonstrated commitments to “doing the right thing”. All completed nomination forms should be returned to:
