Google gives $230K for Detroit teacher supply requests

— Google said Tuesday it would donate more than $230,000 to meet classroom supply requests that 261 Detroit area teachers posted on a crowdfunding website.
The teachers, who educate 32,466 students at 179 schools, will receive materials ranging from paper, pencils and books to laptops, musical instruments and microscopes.
Other projects funded include portable basketball hoops and basketballs at A.L. Holmes Elementary-Middle School in Detroit.
During an event at Michigan Technical Academy in Detroit, former Pistons player Earl Cureton, a Detroit native, joined Google officials in announcing the surprise donation, totaling $231,992.10, for supply requests posted on DonorsChoose.org.
"We are thrilled to partner with DonorsChoose.org to support all of the classroom projects of teachers here in the Detroit area. We owe a lot to our teachers and want to thank them for being a constant source of inspiration," said John Burchett, Google's director of public policy for the U.S., Latin America and Canada.

Is Detroit Public Schools Athletics still relevant?

Where have all the kids gone: the Detroit PSL’s declining enrollment

“The future of the DPS, and the PSL is going to be crucial these next five years or so,” said Detroit Martin Luther King head football coach Dale Harvel. “I started off with about 45 players on varsity last season, and ended the season in the state semifinals with only 28, so it has effected us too.”

“Luckily we have been able to overcome that, but numbers has been a problem for a long time.”
Programs like King, Cass Tech, and East English Village Prep have been fortunate enough to have the depth, as well as the talent to still compete at a high level. But other football programs in the city haven’t been so lucky. Those three programs have had stability for a long time, a reason they have success athletically, and academically. Combined, those three programs have gone 76-23 the last three seasons on the gridiron, and are the premier high school football programs in the city of Detroit, with an enrollment of at least 1,300.

Teachers, challenge your students to take action against childhood hunger and enter our art and writing contest. Winning students will earn scholarships and cash for their schools by creating their own original entries.

When was the last time that one of your assignments truly had the power to change a child's life?

More than 16 million kids in the United States live in households that struggle to put food on the table. That's one out of every five kids.

Your students can make a difference! Start by talking with them about hunger and activism.
Indeed, some of your students may have experienced hunger themselves or have a personal connection to this important issue. After learning more about childhood hunger in the United States, challenge your students to respond to the following prompt:

Childhood hunger is an epidemic that's threatening our country's future. One in five children and teens regularly have to worry about having enough to eat. Hunger prevents kids from reaching their full potential, and it affects their learning, behavior and optimism for the future. Through writing and/or art, create an original work that addresses the problem of childhood hunger in the United States. How has hunger affected your life or the lives of other teens and children? How can you and other teens THINK BIG—beyond canned-food drives or community food pantries that feed a child for a day—to imagine solutions that could end childhood hunger in this country?
