Detroit Omega Foundation Scholarship




Beginning January 26  thru April 15 we will accept applications for three scholarships to qualified candidates. Previous awards have been for $5000 each, payable over a four year period.. Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
·         Must be an African-American male resident of Wayne County.
·         Must graduate by June, 2014 and begin college by September, 2014.
·         Be admitted to a historical black college/university (HBCU) and submit proof of admittance.
·         Must possess a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
·         Must submit a completed application, transcript, ACT or SAT scores and a letter of recommendation from his counselor or principal.
·         Must submit an essay demonstrating school/community activities, future goals and family life information.
·         Must submit proof of financial need verified by SAR, parent’s form 1040 or court papers in guardianship cases. This will be used to make final selections. Documents are shredded following final selections.
·         Selected applicants are required to attend our annual awards luncheon and deliver a 10 minute speech. Winners will be contacted regarding further details.
·         Selected applicants may be required to take a program photo at the DOFI office.
·         Recipients must submit a copy of final grades each semester after enrolling in college.

Methods Test Prep is proud to announce ACT Test Prep Week. This is an opportunity for students and parents to get the stats, facts and strategies to ace the ACT test and position your child for academic succuss.  Methods Test Prep is offering a one week series of webinars to provide students with valuabe testing strategies. Register now for the ACT Classes Live and Online - Each webinar will concentrate on a different component of the ACT Test. All webinars are held from 9:00 P.M. to 9:45P.M.

Rosa Parks Foundation Scholarship

The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation offers a $2,000, non-renewable scholarship to graduating seniors. Winners are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, financial need, and dedication to the civil rights principles of Rosa L. Parks, whose historic stand against racial prejudice in 1955 brought her national recognition.  The Foundation was established in 1980 to provide equal-opportunity scholarships to Michigan high school seniors.

Scholarships to be applied to first year of college only.


APPLICANTS MUST:
1.   Graduate by August 2014.
2.   Have GPA of 2.5 or above.
3.   Describe financial need.
4.   Complete application form and essay.
5.   Document community activities.
6.   Confirm admission to university or college prior to August 2014.
7.   Furnish official copies of high school transcript and ACT or SAT results
8.   Furnish 3 letters of recommendation (at least one from a school representative; also suggest clergy,
      community and/or civic representative).

FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS

CVS Pharmacy will be holding free health screenings performed by medical professionals during the month of January. No appointment is necessary.









The Health Screenings will take place on the specified days from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The examination will include: Blood Pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), Glucose, Cholesterol, and a Nutrition Assessment checks. The event is scheduled on the following days at these CVS Pharmacy locations:

Western Michigan Scholarship Workshop

2014 Coleman A. Young Foundation Scholarship

The 2014 Coleman A. Young Foundation (CAYF) Scholarship Application is now available for download and/or completion at www.cayf.org.

The application deadline is March 5, 2014.

The CAYF Scholars Program provides scholarships to qualified Detroit youth who plan to enroll in four-year, accredited colleges in Fall 2014. The four-year award is valued up to $20,000, and is paid in annual increments of up to $5,000. To fully understand the application process and the CAYF Scholarship requirements, we request permission to meet this month with your 2014 graduating class sponsor, along with your senior class, to inform them of the Coleman A. Young Foundation Scholarship opportunity.

CAYF Scholarship applicants must be Detroit residents, seniors at a Detroit high school, first-time entrants to a four-year, fully-accredited college or university, with a minimum 2.5 grade point average. The Foundation provides mentoring, academic counseling and monitoring to its scholars through the Scholars program. This 32-year-old practice has helped 92% of CAYF Scholarship recipients graduate from college, and 60% have returned to metro Detroit to live and work.

Tuskegee Airmen Youth Programs



Aviation Career Education Academy (ACE)
This Program is designed for Youth in grades 8 - 10 who may or may not have an interest in an aviation career. The 5-day camp is based at Wayne State University. Tours include Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Metro Airport and The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum. Classroom instruction includes the History of Aviation, parts of an airplane, theory of flight, weather, and aviation map reading.

This program formally known as Summer Flight Academy is designed for youth ages 14 to 19 years of age who want to become pilots. The program offers year round flight instruction and ground school leading to a private pilot license. Currently the program can accommodate two youth per year; however, as more aircraft become available the capacity of the program will be expanded. The expansion will entail more youth and other cities near Detroit and further instruction leading to certified flight instructor. The cost of the program to the youth is minimal mostly books and FAA exam fees. The program is designed for disadvantaged youth, male and female in the Metro Area.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum and the Detroit Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., exhibit a wide variety of aviation role models, to over 4,000 students during
a five-day period, in February each year. This programs goal is to provide the student with a panoramic understanding of the paths to pursue to attain a career in aviation and aerospace science. Presentations from aviation professionals provide the following: 1) What opportunities exist; 2) What goals to set to pursue these opportunities; 3) How to achieve the presented goals. A 20,000 Sq. ft Exhibit Hall provides displays that include whole aircraft and aircraft engines, literature from aviation companies and most important a display of the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. Exhibitors at no charge have two 8 ft tables and as much space as needed. Exhibitors also have available presentation rooms in which 30 minute presentations can be made to up to 300 visiting students. Exhibitors are pilots, mechanics, flight attendants, air traffic controllers, electronic technicians, airport designers, FAA inspectors, airport managers, university professors, engineers, and Tuskegee Airmen.
PROGRAM HISTORY
The Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., Detroit Chapter has sponsored an African American History and Aviation Career’s Week for Detroit Public Schools annually for more than twenty (20) years in Detroit, Michigan. Some of the past participants have been Northwest Airlines, United Parcel Service, United Airlines, US Airways, Southwest Airlines, U. S. Air Force, Delta Airlines, U. S. Marines, U. S. Coast Guard, Western Michigan University, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan and a host of others. This program is sponsored in part by Comerica Bank, The Black United Fund and the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum.

The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum is a partner museum and regional center for the Wild Blue Wonders (WBW) Program in the Detroit Metro Area. This program uses aviation to inspire middle school age students to learn more about science, math and technology. Using a team approach, the program utilizes five prepared components or “missions”, each designed to implement a “Flight Crew’s” various problem-solving skills.
Each mission is developed around specific educational standards.  The WBW program has been designed by leaders in aviation education to be flexible and easily implemented in the classroom or as an after-school activity. For more information call Brian Smith at 313-898-0976.



Junior League of Detroit Scholarship



The  Junior League of Detroit will celebrate 100 years of service.  One Hundred scholarships of $1,000.00 will be awarded to high school graduating seniors.  To be eligible, the student must plan to continue their education at a public/private college or vocational schools. Scholarships will be awarded to students who have a GPA of 2.50 or better and volunteer in their communities.  The scholarships are open to Wayne County, Michigan residents and students attending high schools in Wayne County, Michigan.  Scholarship award checks will be payable to colleges in the students' names.

Virtual Business Scholarships



Virtual Business Scholarship is available to high school juniors and seniors majoring in business, finance or marketing.  The scholarship is open to all eligible students in the United States.

Applicants must be nominated by their teachers. Student are chosen based on their academic performance and interest in the use of technology. Burger King Scholars




The Burger King Scholars program is designed to help high-school seniors who are looking to start college next year. Annually, the program awards more than $1.4 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students. Applicants must be residents of the United States or Canada, and must be graduating high school seniors.

They must have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher, and must plan to enroll full-time, without interruption, for the entire 2012-13 academic year at an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school in the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico.

The scholarships can be applied to tuition, fees or books required for course load, but must not exceed the student's educational costs. A student may transfer from one institution to another and retain the award provided the institution and their enrollment fulfill eligibility criteria.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JANUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $1,000 - $50,000.
 



GM - Buick Achievers Scholarships





The Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, funded by the General Motors Foundation, will accept applications for the 2014 scholarships from Monday, January 6, 2014 through 5:00p.m. EST Friday, February 28, 2014.

This is the fourth year the Buick Achievers Scholarships will be awarded to students who excel in the classroom and give back to the community. To be eligible for the program, high school seniors or current undergraduate students must be looking to obtain a college degree in science, technology, engineering, math or other fields related to the auto industry.

Detroit Public Schools Open House


Detroit Public Schools on Saturday, January 18, will hold its first-ever All DPS High School/Career Tech Centers Fair during the district’s new Winter Retain and Gain Campaign. The event, to be held at Renaissance High School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., will showcase the offerings at all DPS high schools and Career Technical Centers.
The district’s elementary and middle schools will also hold Open Doors Day on Wednesday, January 15 from 3-5 p.m. at every school site.
Both events, part of the district’s new year-round marketing strategy, seek to build on the positive momentum gained from the district’s successful Summer Enrollment Campaign, which stemmed historic enrollment losses and helped schools to gain market share.
The high school fair will have a number of exciting elements, including information about specialty programs and career pathways, as well as scholarship information. It will also showcase details about the district’s new Career Academy, where high school students can earn a comprehensive high school diploma, associate’s degree through Henry Ford Community College, heavy machine operator certification and a paid internship through coursework in plumbing and pipefitting, HVAC, electricity, carpentry, masonry, horticulture and interior furnishings. This new program will begin in September 2014 and include a four-week summer “bridge” program in June at the restructured A. Philip Randolph Technical High School. All Career Technical Centers will showcase their unique offerings, including culinary programs and construction trades courses.
